“Ian was born in South Canterbury in 1923. He grew up on his parents' farm in the Esk Valley
area near St Andrew's just South of Timaru. Went to the small country school there. Timaru
Boys High School shaped a love of teaching and the euphonium. His parents were stalwarts
of the Presbyterian Church. His father wounded in WWI, a quiet man who Ian said taught
him compassion. His mother a true pioneer woman, a founder of the PWMU in the parish,
ran the farm during the war years. Ian set out to become a teacher, but got called up after
only one term teaching. He served overseas in Italy and was wounded in the leg at Farenza.
He saw his special friend Don Buchanan killed. His interest in the peace movement began
about this time.
Returning to NZ after the war was an unsettled time for him as for many others. He
remembered the SCM and Moral Rearmament as movements that assisted him to readjust.
Eventually, he enrolled at Otago University and set out as a divinity student for the PCNZ.
His time in the Theological Hall both excited and drew him out. There from 1950-1952 the
church was beginning a period of expansion which became the New Life Movement. He
remembered the excitement of learning to use radio with Lloyd Geering, then minister at
Opoho Church.
Ordained in early 1953 he began ministry in the Heriot-Kelso parish in the Mataura
Presbytery. He and Barbara Squire married in October of that year, having met each other
at a Bible Class conference in Invercargill. They began a long and fruitful ministry together.
When he retired in 1988 he returned to Masterton to take up his many retirement interests.
In retirement he loved the time to read without interruption. He expressed his love of
singing by becoming a tenor in the Wairarapa Singers; they sang "Thine Be the Glory" at
his funeral. He had always maintained an interest in the RSA. And he developed his interest
in bowling. He served many years on the Board of Presbyterian Support Central, where his
advice was always wise, and his influence on other members always gracious.
He felt for the underdog and the litle people in his ministry. Experiences from being bullied
at secondary school, and the years in the army and the war encouraged the growth of his
compassion. He and Barbara experienced tragedy themselves when their 17 year old son
was killed in a motorbike accident. He loved to talk through with the people in his care the
great life experiences of birth, death and marriage. His pastoral care of people after
funerals was exemplary. He communicated a rich enjoyment of life to ordinary folk and his
family. He loved good food and conversation. He enjoyed watching rugby, hockey and
cricket. He was thoughtful man, setting up study groups and joining the Sea of Faith to
keep in touch with the latest thinking. He kept his spirit alive during his last illness,
seeing it as part of life under God.” (from Obit.)

From United Presbyterian Church, Scotland.
born 1811, son of Rev. William Hogg who ordained him 12 August 1935 at Rattray
Arrived with his first wife on "Slains Castle", Wellington, December 1852
After death of his first wife married wife (2) Sarah Barbour aged 19 years
Wanganui 1853 - resigned 1866 due to ill-health.
‘He came to Wellington on eve of Christmas 1852 for the sake of his health, and narrowly escaped
in Palliser
Bay where the “Slains Castle” hung for hours on a dangerous reef, but was eventually
floated off on the rising tide.’
He went to Wanganui in January 1853. His first Church was of toitoi and he had an attendance of about 30.
His was a truly pioneer ministry. He lived for years with his family in a small four roomed cottage, unlined, on £200 a year, his wife grinding all the flour needed in a little steel hand mill. When not trudging along muddy and uneven cattle tracks he rode a bullock.
A new Church was built in 1854.
With Rev Richard Taylor, sent to Putiki, Wanganui, by Bishop Selwyn in 1843, they established a roster of visits to Thomas McWilliams, a Scottish farmer and miller, at Matarawa, later the site of a historic church built in 1863.
After thirteen years of arduous labour he resigned through ill-health in 1866; he lived in Wanganui till December 1874 when his name disappears from records.
Resided in a Lunatic Asylum, Adelaide Road, Wellington – had been there some years.

“St Peters was [from 1939] greatly blessed by Anne’s tireless contribution. Anne was a
Sunday School teacher, a Bible Class leader, secretary of the Bay of Plenty Easter Camp
Committee, a music teacher and involved in the church choir and other music
activities. After graduation as a Deaconess, she worked in a parish associated with the
Strongman Coal Mine at Greymouth before being appointed Matron of a Presbyterian
Social Services Hostel for Young Women in Wellington. Anne then became Deaconess
and Parish Assistant at Knox Church in Lower Hutt. This included Scripture teaching at
St Oran’s College, Lower Hutt.
“My interest was in people and places. I set out to train myself to accept, understand and
love people from all walks of life…”
In 1972 one of the highlights for Anne was visiting India where Catherine [her Sister] had
been since 1953. Anne had been Catherine’s great supporter back home doing all she could
to foster interest in what Catherine was doing.
In the early 1990’s, Anne came back to Tauranga where she once again enjoyed the rich
fellowship of her sisters. Anne once again involved herself in the life of St Peter’s and the
Bethlehem Community Church where she was much loved. She was a much appreciated
parish visitor and latterly president of the Association of Presbyterian Women at St Peter’s.”

HONORÉ, Rev Abraham
b 1818 Fredericia, Jutland, Denmark
He was of French-Huegenot extraction. At age 22 he offered his services to North German Mission
Society and was accepted. He had been brought up on a farm with the result that his education
was inadequate; he was therefore sent to a seminary in Hamburg for two years. In 1843 the attention
and interest of the Society was drawn to the Maori race, when a German whaler returned to Bremen
with a Maori youth as a member of the crew. Following study and consideration the Society sent the
Rev Wohlers out to establish a Mission in the South Island of New Zealand. After the Rev Wohlers
had
been at Ruapuke for four years, the Bremen Society sent out Mr Honoré to assist him.
He sailed in the ‘Blundell’ in 1848. For some twenty years they worked together, on farms by day, and on
Sundays preached to the Maoris.
Ruapuke 1848
Stewart Island 1855
Jacobs River 1859
At the request of the Bremen Society Mr Honoré was ordained by Southland Presbytery on 24 March 1869.
Honore felt that the population of Maori in the South Island was declining steadily, and too few
remained there to warrant the activity of the Mission there. He went to the North Island to the
Rangitikei area where there was a larger Maori population, and also he was nearer his own sons.
Rangitikei 1871
He worked here without financial support from the New Zealand Presbyterian Church; he was supported by the
assistance of his friends and a grant of $100 annually from the Bremen Society. It was reported to
the General Assembly in 1874 that a number of congregations had held a collection to assist him and
his work. It was urged that as a man ordained by the NZ Presb. Church he should also be supported
by them. At that time the Assembly was not prepared to go further than to invite all congregations
to hold a collection towards his support. Finally in 1881 his name was entered on the roll of our
Church as one of our Missionaries, for whom the Church took financial responsibility.
Being a Dane he sometimes conducted services in Danish for Danish settlers in New Zealand. He worked in
the Rangitikei, Turakina, and Wangaehu districts, and later also in Manawatu and Horowhenua districts.
Died July 1894
The collected letters of the Rev. Abraham Honoré and Elisabeth Honoré compiled by Ralph Dearlove,
