“While his strongly held views could some times contribute to conflict, particularly with the
presbytery, his deep pastoral concern for those dealing with grief and tragedy was very
effective and appreciated. While in Wanganui Thor completed his BA degree. This was a
considerable achievement, given the limitations of his early education and the way in which
his studies had to compete with full-time work responsibilities.
Thor’s considerable expertise in the area of finance and building found an outlet in his
membership of the Beneficiary Fund committee from 1970 to 1979, the Church Property
Trustees 1973 to 1985, and as convener of the Finance and Property Committee of the
Wellington Presbytery. In this later capacity he spent many hours helping parishes. In
retirement Thor served for a period as Chaplain at a rest home and gained great
satisfaction from contributing to the development of the Ngatiawa campsite.” (From Obit.)

Ord Assist St Andrews-St Davids Wanganui 15.9.1983 res 31.3.1985
'It took a long time for Rev Eti Petaia to become a Min of the Gospel.  He had
begun his training at Malua Coll in Samoa in early 1960s & was close to
graduating when both his parents died within a short time.  Being the eldest Eti
assumed responsibility for the education & upbringing of his sisters & brothers.
In time he came to NZ, worked at several interesting jobs, married Ailoa &
raised a family of one son & two daughters   Greatly interested in sport, he
played senior rugby in Ak, & later took up golf, & his drives became legendary.
There was also full commitment to his Ch.
Once his brothers & sisters were established Eti felt he could resume his
training for the min & went to Hall. He was laid low by a stroke a week before
Christmas 1984; It was serious enough to prevent a return to the min. Eti's min
was brief, but significant & important; it demonstrated  the real need for a
resident Samoan min. .... Nor will be forgotten Eti's broad beaming smile,
which was the main channel of communication during the year of his illness.'
