accepted responsibility for an East-end parish (London) with three centres - Milwall,

“As well as exercising an excellent teaching and pastoral ministry, Phil served the wider
church well. He was well ahead of his time in encouraging the use of visual aids and new
‘hardware’, never as a stunt but as an integral part of Christian education and worship.
His ability and interest in music was of great benefit in many a parish.
Many parishes today would not be aware that they owe him a great deal for his wise input
through the Church Worship and Architecture Committee. Many unwise designs were
saved by this committee from being inflicted upon innocent Boards of Managers.
Phis was well-schooled in theology and hada  very sharp mind but was always able to
speak to every person he met at their level.
While Phil was not effusive in talking about his own personal faith, his inner devotion
was so real and sincere, and could be summed up in the words which meant so much to
him ‘Simply to Thy Cross I Cling’ ”

Assistant Minister St Georges Takapuna NSP (part-time) 3.7.1977 - retired 31.12.1981
Moderator of North Shore Presbytery 1980.
Born in Eltham Bob was prevented by the depression from finishing his secondary
education. When called to the ministry he completed his MA at Auckland University
and later a BD from Melbourne.
As a student during World War 2, he defied the Churches directive not to register
as a conscientious objector and testified publicly to his lifelong commitment to peace.
He particularly asked for a 'difficult' first parish so that his exemption from war service
would not be a 'soft option'.   He and Joan were married in 1943 shortly before moving
to Reefton. Their three years there were to typify Bob's ministry.  In a dispirited town
he started a local news sheet; faced with a choice between a Sunday Service or
chopping wood for a widow he took the congregation out to cut wood.   He was a man
for the people and the people returned his love.
At St Martins Christchurch a new and imaginative Church was built and Bob's pacifist
and social concerns were well known and (somewhat cautiously) accepted.
In the late 1950s Bob visited Hong Kong to serve for 3 months with an American
social service organization. This visit changed his life and led to the adoption through
the National Council of Churches of over 200 Chinese orphans by NZ families. The
direction of his ministry also changed leading him to Sydney in 1963 to serve as
Secretary for Resettlement of Refugees and Inter-Church Aid with the Australian
Council of Churches. After 8 years in Sydney the Spracketts returned to Mairangi and
Castor Bays Parish, and in retirement to part-time Ministry at St George’s Church
Takapuna and Chaplaincy in the Inter-Church Trade and Industrial Mission.   In these
years his active involvement in the North Shore peace movement saw him and Joan
once again in the protest lines and tirelessly encouraging  others.
Bob was a gentle man, who believed that ministry ought to cost something. He had a
winning way with people and a deep commitment to the Kingdom of God.  (from Obit.)

STEELE, Rev James Thomas Villiers (Jim)        M.A.
b 8 February 1905 Wellington; w Ada Ellen nee Bailey b 26 January 1908  m 14 September 1932 d 22 June 2003 aged 95 years. Interred in the same grave as her husband after her death.
Hall 1927-1929.   When he returned at the beginning of 1929 for his final year, he suffered what he thought was the result of a speck of sawdust in his eyen while assisting his Father, a builder, during the holidays.   It was soon diagnosed, however, as an extremely serious condition of eye & spine (Tb).  He returned home and was admitted to Wellington Hospital.   At  one point Doctors considered that he would have no more than 48 hours to live.   However, his serenity of spirit and courageous will, based on his strong faith, pulled him through, to the amazement of his Doctors and nurses. He was regarded as a living miracle by them.
He spent 3 years on his back covalescing, much of it with his back in plaster.
Rev J.M. Bates started the 'NZ Journal of Theology' (pub 1931-1935), largely to give Jim an interest to work on in bed and assist his recovery.   (Jim was joint editor with Bates).
Finally it was felt that with care and extra rest Jim could begin  work and be ordained as a Minister.
Ordained Duntroon, North Otago Presbytery, 16 September 1932 - till death.
Jim Steele was a great scholar, - one of the greatest the Hall has ever produced.  His knowledge of Calvin was unequalled in New Zealand.  He was a great Churchman, & a genuine New Zealander.   He was an ideal parish minister; he knew all his people intimately and cared for them.   He was obliged, because of his illness, to rest several hours  during the day.  He did this and was able to fulfil his ministry, until his strength failed him. He also had a keen sense of humour.  At Knox College he was part of a practical joke when three students who had been invited to dinner at the Presbyterian Womens Training Institute took three others with them, dressed as women, assuming their wives would naturally be invited with them. Jim was one of the alleged females (and gave his regular broadcast talk in that costume!).   A photo of the party is still extant In the Presbyterian Church Archives at Knox College.
Died  26 January 1947, in office. Interred Duntroon Cemetery.

Free Church, Bonhill, Dunbartonshire 1847 to c.1854
Resigned owing to ill health 1854 with the view of going to America
Briefly returned to New Brunswick 1855
Ran a Missionary Church in Paris, Ontario, Canada c.1855 to 1859
West Calder, near Edinburgh 1860
Sent to New Zealand by the Colonial Committee of the Free Church of Scotland 1865
Left for New Zealand on the 'Caribou' 1865
The intention was that he set up a second Presbyterian charge in invercargill but owing to the
"unprosperous state of the town at the time" he was appointed to the country charge of Wallacetown
just north of Invercargill.
Ind Wallacetown SP 4.4.1866 as first Minister of the charge - Retired 6.4.1881 due to "increasing
years and infirmities".
The town held an attraction for him and he simply moved from the manse to a house which he
had built in the neighbourhood.
Clerk of Southland Presbytery 1875-76  (Pro tem).
"Mr Stevens was in all respects an admirable representative of the old school of Presbyterian devines.
He was tall and dignified in appearance, and his manners had the polished and somewhat formal
courtesy of older times. He had a strong sense of humour and could tell and enjoy a good story; but
he never forgot the demenour that became his calling. As a preacher he occupied a high place. His
discourses, which were really eloquent, were prepared with scrupulous care, and were delivered 'ore
rotundo'
[with a loud resounding voice] and with great solemnity and earnestness of manner.
In doctrine he was very orthodox, keeping fast hold of the Calvinistic system set forth in the Confession
of Faith, and disdaining to part with a single article on the plea of obscleteness or offensiveness to
modern taste . ... he was to the front in the Church Courts when any point of the old divinity was
assailed; and displayed the same watchfulness when even the forms and accessaries of Presbyterian
worship were in the course of change. On such occasions his words and appearance were like those
of a prophet of old, come to denounce the backsliding and degenaracy of the Church and the time.
He was in every sense a conservative, and.... viewed with profound jealousy whatever threatened the
old ecclesiastical order of things.
...He was widely known and as highly respected, especially in Southland where he laboured so long,
and where his services were universally acceptable...."
[From Obituary "Southland Times" 11 Jan 1892]

Akaroa-Banks Peninsula Presbyterian Church (Limited Local Ministry) Christchurch Presbytery, 1998 — retired April 2005
Minister Emeritus, 17 April 2005
Aubrey was a loyal and faithful servant of our church. He filled a vital role in a unique parish in the presbytery giving his love and commitment to the Banks Peninsula parish, providing ministry to the local congregation and the many visitors to Akaroa. This ministry cared for the older members of the parish and also reached out to children and youth.
Aubrey was an enthusiastic supporter of Mainly Music and established a Youth Trust and Youth Group which provided vital new support for parents, children and young people on the Peninsula.
Ministry for Aubrey was not simply caring for an inward focused parish group and his activities seamlessly merged into the wider community in ways that made the church visible in a positive light and brought Christ into the community with no strings attached. Aubrey was always conscious of the changing world around him and his Christian calling to be part of that change in a positive and caring way. He facilitated changes in the parish structure and buildings that he saw as necessary and challenged the elders and members to plan a destiny for the parish's future. He also involved himself in the community and played his part as a true Christ filled citizen of Akaroa.
His wife Sarah supported him in his ministry and in his illness.
