Wellington Presbytery Approves St Andrews Appointment (20 November 2001)

Media Release 20 November 2001

The Wellington Presbytery tonight approved the decision to invite Rev Dr Margaret Mayman as minister of St Andrews on the Terrace Presbyterian Church.

The Presbytery, the regional oversight group, decided that the strong support for Dr Mayman from the St Andrews congregation was enough to say that Dr Mayman should have the job.

"A new minister will mean a great deal to the St Andrews congregation who are looking to forward to new initiatives and greater connection with the Wellington inner city community. Presbytery feels that St Andrews have chosen the right person for the job," said Rev Neil Johnston, Presbytery moderator.

All the Church legal requirements for the appointment had been met.

"We are preparing to welcome Dr Mayman into the Presbytery next year," Mr Johnston said.

Under the Presbyterian system for 'calling' ministers Dr Mayman will not be offered the job until her home Presbytery of Christchurch approves the 'call' from St Andrews. Christchurch Presbytery will meet by the end of the month.

Dr Mayman said she was very pleased at Wellington Presbytery's decision but would wait until after the Christchurch meeting before deciding whether to accept the position.
