Born Hawera; at 16 he left home to be seaman on a Union Steam Ship Company vessel;
for short time only as his parents persuaded him to return home, go back  to school and
get his matriculation. On completing that he joined the Public Trust, and from 1921-31
he served in Whangarei, Auckland, and Hamilton. In this period he became actively
engaged in Church activities, was a lay preacher and then became a Home Missionary. 
He was Chaplain for  two years in the Army at Burnham, and at Forbury Park; he was
Port Chaplain for the British Sailors Society.  He had a strong sense of history; played
an important part in the writing of ‘Port Chalmers – Gateway to Otago’.  He had a long
association with the Masonic Lodge - member 1928, Master 1970, Grand Chaplain 1970.

After the war worked as an Accountant for various stock firms in Invercargill, becoming members
of North Invercargill Presbyterian Church. Responded to an urgent call for Ministry trainees and
moved to Dunedin with his wife and family to train for the ministry.

“As a parish minister in each different parish, he gave 100% to make the parish ‘go’. During his
time at St David’s, he convened the Assembly’s Christian Education Committee. He and Rene
continued their special interest with young people at Chalmers, Timaru, where they ran a very
diverse youth group which young people enjoyed. A former member of that youth group said
‘Doug challenged us to live our daily life continually being aware of God’s presence in all creation,
in other people, and in the world around us, and to be committed members of His body, the Church.’
At Aranui they worked hard and built up a fine, caring and Christ-centred fellowship. Earlier, he
and Rene trained as Marriage Guidance Counsellors, and made their time available to assist people
having difficulty with their marriage relationship. Doug had a very pleasant way with people and
was greatly loved in every parish. He was straight and honest, and people respected his fine qualities.
He was always well prepared with his pulpit work that was much appreciated, as was a dedicated
pastor who had great empathy with people especially those in need. Retirement did not mean the
end of Doug’s ministry. He was a willing member of Presbytery and often served as Interim
Moderator during vacancies. He helped by leading study circles, leading worship and caring for

Province reached by a long circuitous trip via Shanghai, Gulangsu, boat to Hong Kong,
Singapore and Rangoon, then overland through Burma to Kunming in China, then taken
by a Friends Ambulance Unit by truck to Chengdu and lastly by bus to Jiading. 
Remained at Jiading (Leshan) for five years, being the United Church of Canada Missions
Board Station.
Assisted with district Evangelistic work then with the Mission Hospital administration work.
Became involved with Evangelistic and relief work among students at Wuhan University
which had relocated to Jiading.
Due again to advancing Japanese forces into Szechwan Province, travelled to India , being
taken to the LMS Misison Headquarters at Calcutta, remaining there for 7 months.
Left for England from Bombay via Suez, arriving at Plymouth the night before V-J Day,
15 August 1945.
Carried out deputation work for the LMS, took on a teaching position at a private School
and worked in the Selly Oak Missions Library in Birmingham.
Appointed as District Missionaries in Western Samoa, including Educational work at
Leulumoega Fou Boys’ High School.
Left England for Western Samoa Aug 1946, travelling via NZ.
After two years appointed by the Samoan Church as Director of Education and given the
the added responsibility of oversight for Teacher Training and all Village and District Schools.
Spent regular furloughs in New Zealand, and arrived permanently 3rd August 1959.
Involved in establishing a Congregational Church at Papatoetoe and lectured in Old
Testament Prophets at the Congregational Theological College of New Zealand, and
appointed as acting Principal during 1969 until the College closed.
Inducted to Mt Eden View Road Congregational Church Auckland 15 August 1960.
Involved in the Committee for Church Union, the formation of the Inter-Church Counselling
Service, the Joint Chaplaincy to Auckland University, the Inter-Church Committee  on

Toronto, Canada.
In Scotland in 1937, he took part in the formation of the World Council of Churches.

He commenced work in a dairy factory in Taieri, & rose through various positions of
responsibility in different parts of NZ to become 1st Sec of Dairy Control Board, a
position he held for 23 yrs.   He was a member of the NZ Fruitgrowers Federation
fr 1921; & its President  fr 1924-46.
He was an elder for over 50 yrs in several congs; a leader in the BC Movement from
its early yrs; & later its President. He was active in the Coms of the Ass & Pr; a Ch
Property Trustee for 37 yrs, & its Chairman for 12 yrs; Chmn of Ass Finance Com
for many yrs.  He was deeply interested in the ecumenical movt; Chmn of Nat Miss
Council; memb of Inter-Ch Council on Public Affairs; represented NZ at 1st Ass
of WCC at Amsterdam 1948; he had a profound knowledge of the Ch in all its
aspects, & worked with enthusiasm for its welfare.

An enquiry into a  fire which destroyed the Church determined that the fire had been lit by some unknown incendiary (traces of an accellerant were found). Suspicion rested heavily on the Minister, the Rev Moses S. Breach who had fallen out with his congregation due to differences of opinion and Church attendance had consequently dropped off alarmingly.
After due consideration Presbytery resolved "That Mr Breach be now loosed from the Pastorate of New Plymouth congregation". Instead of appearing before Presbytery as requested he simply tendered his resignation. He was therefore declared no longer a Minister of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand.
The "Hawkes Bay Herald" reported the following event which took place six years later on the 2 June 1888 :
"New Plymouth - A most disgraceful scene occurred today at the Presbyterian Church here. Mr Breach, who was minister several years at the old church (since burned down) has suddenly asserted some claim to the new building for alleged arrears of salary. He took possession of the church on Thursday, taking off the lock and putting on a new one, and placing a padlock on the gate....... Then a scuffle ensued between the Police and Mr Breach which ended in Mr Breach, after considerable difficulty, being ejected from the premises. A watchman has been placed in the building all night to guard against another attempt on the part of Mr Breach to take possession."
At the Police Court on the 19th June 1888, he “was charged with malicious entry to the Presbyterian Church by removing the lock from the door and replacing it with another.”
‘He was the cause of much strife.’

Canterbury NZ, later joining the Presbyterian Church at Geraldine. Having a trained voice, he
joined the Church Choir and Musical Society. His Minister, Rev Madill, considered he would
be very suitable as a Missionary, and after suitable training at Geraldine, he was appointed by
the Home Missions Committee as Home Missionary to Ratanui in the Catlins, South Otago.
His circuit of 13 preaching stations in the district was over some 37 miles of hilly bush tracks
and country roads. He travelled by horseback with his Bible, prayer books and sermons. Also
started a Boy Scout Troop at Ratanui.

Fell ill with congestion of the lungs in 1929 which affected his heart. Spent a number of
months in Owaka Hospital. Despite many encouraging reports of improvement, he died just
before his 29th birthday survived by his wife and three children.
“Mr Brendon made friends wherever he went, irrespective of denomination. Roman Catholics,
Anglicans, Presbyterians and [all others], were numbered amongst his personal friends who
were unanimous in admiration of his cheery and optimistic disposition, good nature and
broad-minded and tolerant views, and above all the practical Christianity which he brought to
bear in the exercise of his duties. He realised that the boys and girls of today are the men and
women of tomorrow, and that the Scout and Guide movements provided the best form of
training, both morally and physically for boys and girls, and he spared no effort towards the
well being and advancement of the local Souts and Guides. Mr Brendon has, during his short
term of Ministry given of his best, and has undoubtedly achieved that, which should be the
aim of all – to leave the World a little better than we found it.”

“He covered parish on foot, to western shores of the harbour. He served during a decade of
difficulties, the NZ Maori wars and depressed times. He was for many years  Classical
Master at Auckland Grammar School, including much of the period of his ministry at
Onehunga; much of later years teaching were after he had retired.”
The bell at Onehunga Presbyterian Church was sent as a personal gift to him by friends
in 1863 and he gifted it to the Church in 1910.

BROWN, Dr. John Kirk

Previously working as a Doctor in Gisborne.
A Doctor working for ‘Corso’ (Friends Ambulance Unit) who was appointed to the Kong
Chuen Mission Hospital of the NZ South China Mission near Canton in 1947. He fell ill
with encephalitis shortly after his arrival there at Christmas 1947 and despite expert care and
medical attention from Doctors in Canton (including an internationally qualified visiting
Doctor in tropical medicine who was visiting Canton at the time), he tragically died early
January 1948. His parents in Gore paid for the building of a ‘godown’ or storage building
on the Kong Chuen Compound in his memory together with a plaque which was apparently
still in situ as late as the 1980’s. (The buildings were believed to have been demolished in
1998. The Archives received photographs in 2013 showing that buildings in the Compound
are still standing and used as a hospital.)
Dr Brown was buried in the new Christian Cemetery at Paak Shui Tong near Kong Chuen,
South China.

More recently had one year's experience as a teacher of Botany and Zoology in assitry of the Church of Scotland but he was unable to obtain Provisional Matriculation until he was 25.
Despite recommendations from the Presbytery of Dunfermline and Kinross and a testimonial from his Parish Minister with the good wishes of the congregation he was unable to be admitted to the modified course as the Church of Scotland's Assembly Committee was not able to relax the requirement that he be over 25.
A member of the Erskine Parish Board of Management for 3 years and a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent for three years.
Emigrated to New Zealand with a view to entering upon studies for the Ministry.
