CARTWRIGHT, Sr Jane Mabel             Mrs Greensill
Jane Mabel Cartright was born at Papakaio in 1883, the daughter of a farming family.
Little is known about her early life, but her diary tells of a conversion experience
inspired by the sermons of a Middlemarch Presbytetian Minister and encouraged by
the local school teacher, Evelyn (later Sister) McAdam. McAdam herself was also a
‘convert’ and in 1902 she also became a Deaconess and , later, a mentor to younger
Deaconesses like Mabel.  Mabel entered the Presbyterian Women’s Training Institute,
probably in 1906, finished her training in December 1907, and began work with the
South Dunedin Church on the 13th of that month. She remained there until mid 1909,
when she was persuaded to move to Wellington to work for St. John’s Congregation.
Obviously unhappy in Wellington, she returned south in 1912, becoming Deaconess
to Dunedin’s First Church. She resigned as Deaconess in 1917 and then trained as a
Nurse at Wanganui Hospital, gaining state registration in July 1921. A midwifery
qualification from St. Helens Hospital in Aucklnad followed in 1924. By 1923, Mabel
was working as a Health Department district nurse in Rawene, a district in the
Hokianga with a large Maori population. She was later based in Hastings. In 1930,
when Mabel was 46, she married Walter Greensill, a farmer, and lived near Havelock
in the Marlborough Sounds for some years. She had no children. Widowed, she
returned to Dunedin where she was cared for by a sister until her death in August 1964.

him in the circumstances which have led to his resignation, and to record their

'Don was educated at Auckland Grammar School and then joined the Bank of NZ in
Auckland.  He had great interest in youth work - taught Sunday School, ran gym
Classes in a Boys Home.  The Bank transferred him to Raetihi, and later to Masterton.
While there World War Two broke out and in 1940 he enlisted in the Sixth Field
Ambulance.  He went overseas and worked in an operating theatre as Anaesthetist
in Crete.  His unit was captured and he spent 3 years in POW Camps.  He was shifted
from camp to camp, and he started a Bible Class wherever he went.
When he was sent to Poland there was no Chaplain, and Don was given permission
to conduct services in the camp.  Suffering mainly from malnutrition he was sent to
hospital in France, and later freed in an exchange of POW’s.
In 1946 he returned to NZ and began his course in the Hall.
In 1950 he married Noeline Finnie, a Deaconess.  Don was intimately involved with
the community.  He was a J.P., Treasurer of the Ratepayers Assn; he served as
Chaplain to the Crete veterans, Sixth Field Ambulance, and the POW Association.
Don was a humble, friendly, loving person. Having been involved in and seen so
much suffering, he developed a capacity for deep compassion and great sympathy.
The difficulties of life strengthened his faith'.    (from Obituary)

"George's clarity of thought, his sense of humour and his ability to enable people with quite different points of view to work effectively
together meant that he made vital and lasting contributions to a number of boards and committees, including the Presbyterian Ethics
Committee. His qualities of sensitivity and discretion were also integral to his pioneering service as a Complaints Officer for the NZ
College of General Practitioners.... he read widely and thought deeply about the theological, social and ethical challenges facing
the Christian faith. Whilst his own understanding of that faith changed and developed throughout his lifetime, George remained
convinced that at the heart of the Christian story there is the enduring mystery of love."
Throughout his mission service, George considered Nerolei to be his equal in ministry and his family to be missionaries with him.

“Stephen Cark was a direct and uncomplicated dperson. There was never any
doubting what he meant nor where he stood. Stephen was a man whose faith
permeated evry part of life and made it an invisible whole. Whatever he did he
gave his best.
He was a man of strong evangelical convictions but these did not close the door
on his understanding of and friendship with his fellow ministers. Stephen was a
gracious Christian gentleman loved by all who knew him; possessing a gift of
friendship and of sharing his faith with those whom he met.” (from Obit.)
