his faith and the songs of the land of his birth, Wales. For 23 yearts his preaching,
marrying, burying, and visiting ministries made an impact on the lives of Duendin
people. Lloyd was always there for people. He was there when needed in time of war
and gave distinguished service. From a modest background…. [He] never lost his
love of and common touch with ordinary folk. Gifted with good memory, his was not

witness inspired, encouraged and enabled many people to rise above their own

A charge of heresy was brought against Lloyd at the 1967 Assembly by Mr R.J. Wardlaw, elder, and Rev R.J. Blaikie. After full discussion (transmitted direct on TV) the Assembly dismissed the charge. This trial raised interest and controversy throughout New Zealand, and beyond, not only in the Church, but in offices, shops, factories and wherever people gather. It caused religion to be talked about almost everywhere. For many it brought relief, revealing the Christian faith as rational in modern terms, which are acceptable in the Church. For others it contradicted the essence of the Christian religion. After a period Lloyd resigned from the Church to take up a post as Professor of Religious Studies at Victoria University Wellington, where his classes were crowded, and he also gave sets of public lectures and courses which aroused considerable interest. One main course of public lectures was published each year for a number of years.

Class Movement was born (by George Troup, elder, along with W.H. Rose, elder, St Paul’s Christchurch); after
retirement he raised funds for theological scholarships and for the Turakina Maori Girls College.
Campaigner against gambling, Sabbath-breaking, illicit sex, opium trade, strong supporter for Bible in Schools
and the Peace Movement.
‘From the first he exercised a powerful ministry and was prominent in the Courts of the Church.’
‘In Dunedin he began a ministry of great force, fearless courage, and evangelical passion.’
‘For nearly 50 years he was a leader of outstanding ability, tireless energy and passionate devotion to Christ
and his Church; a man of action, a scholar, an administrator with vision, an enthusiast for all that made for
righteousness and truth, a prophet to his generation, fearlessly applying the Word of God to the social,
national and international questions of his time. With incisive clarity and burning eloquence, in the pulpit and
on the platform, in the Courts of the Church and by the use of his pen, he advocated every cause that made for
the Kingdom of God and his righteousness. .... a prince and a ruler in Israel.’

“(Studied) at Westminster College, Cambridge under an outstanding teaching faculty and in company
With fellow students for ministry from all over the world. Participation as a youth delegate to the first
meeting of the World Council of Churches, Amsterdam, 1948, cemented his lifelong commitment to
ecumenism. He believed this is God’s world and God’s church – but which, to persuade a divided
world of the Good News, must practise what it preaches in terms of unity.
…With help from the University Physical Education Department, he established the Kensington
Youth Club (in Dunedin) for underprivileged street kids. It attracted countrywide interest.
His preaching was much valued for its reasoned, well structured presentation of the central core of
Christian belief and application to life, his largeness of mind and feeling for good liturgy. He worked
with the Maori Synod in providing hostels for Maori boy apprentices and for Maori girls.
His outstanding contribution as Convener of the Overseas Missions Committee was instrumental in
persuading the church to move from effectively controlling overseas work to working in partnership
with firmly established young overseas churches. During the theological controversies of the 1960’s,
Norman threw himself into helping opposing persuasions not to give up on the search for understanding.
Norman sought to identify what mattered most in any issue of faith and life. His ready smile, kind
nature and interest in others made him a ‘man for all seasons’ and a good gift of God to the Church”

“Mr Gillies was a man of deep spiritual sensibilities, his preaching was characterised by a
keen evangelical fire and deep poetical eloquence…. Mr Gillies was always an earnest
contender for the faith and often gave public lectures to combat the upsurge of free thought….
His mastery of the English language and ability as a thinker made him a force to be reckoned
with in matters of faith and morals. As a poet Mr Gillies had considerable skill and vision….”
He submitted his resignation to Session on the 17th February 1887 after continued disattisfaction
within a minority of the Church membership who would not attend services and the unwelcome
attention of some members of Dunedin Presbytery who were beginning to inquire into the
affairs of the Congregation after complaints from the aforesaid members.
His resignation was unanimously accepted by the congregation but with deep regret. It appears
that the the members of his congregation and Session who remained were prefectly happy with
his ministry.
After his resignation a number of North Dunedin members induced him to minister
to them in
Albany Street Hall as long as it suited his convenience.
