HADFIELD, Rev Keith Allan              B.A.

w Pearl Helen Staite  b 18.5.1917 m 17.5.1939
Raised on an isolated farm by his Father and left school at 13 to work on the farm.
During his teenage years he was influenced by the Presbyterian Bible Class Movement.
An experience in a Nelson Church changed his life and empowered him for the rest of
his life. The pulpit appeared to be filled with radiant light and he ‘heard’ God calling
him to become a Minister. At age 18 with no money and little education but encouraged
by his Minister, the Rev Madill; Keith enrolled at High School along with the third
formers, later attending Canterbury University. While a student at the Theological Hall,
he regularly cycled between Dunedin and Blenheim.

Later, undeterred by age, both Pearl and Keith worked in Queensland as Christian
Education Officers where they ran camps, safaris and training events until Keith was
seventy. Upon return to New Zealand undertook relieving work from Whitianga to
Invercargill.
“Keith Hadfield’s influence will continue. Empowered by that early vision, he never let
his shortcomings block him. If they had not bothered God, why should they bother Keith!
Young people in particular respected ‘Haddy’s’ simplicity and dedication. .” (From Obit.)

forest where Manukau City is today.  The parish was on both sides of the forest, and he
often walked through it  to visit people on the other side.  It was on one of these walks
(had he left it too late, failing to make out the faint track as the light faded in evening?)
that he became lost in the forest and died of exposure over night.

"Bruce has a strong sense of being guided and directed by God but he also knew love. The vision of that possibility and the
pain of failure in allowing God's Spirit free reign in his life was a deep motivating force in Bruce's ministry. Seeing God's
Spirit change lives, heal deep hurts and restore broken relationships were miracles he saw happening in others' lives as well
as his own and these happenings deep within people Bruce found a strong compelling force for his work in the ministry.
With this vision Bruce expected the Church to grow - in maturity, in numbers, in group activity, in service to community and in
love of members toward one another and he used the Church Growth Seminars to communicate his vision.

“He captured young people. His sermons when directed to children were often in serial
form – wait until next week for the next episode – and they were left on a cliffhanger.
Rowland had a notable pulpit gift. It came from the foundation of his faith – the inspired
word of God in the Bible. In family services Rowland’s skills as a Teacher were clear.
He freely used visual aids – sketching pictures as he preached to illustrate a point. Yet
for all his achievements Rowland was a humble man. His accomplishments shaped the
lives of others.” (From Obit.)
