McELDOWNEY,  Dr. Robert Dennis       D.Litt (Hon)
b. 1926
w. Zoë   m.(?)  d.1990
Born with a congenital heart condition, he was not expected to live beyond childhood.
His remarkable seventy years were testimony to the devoted care of his Mother, two
life-transforming operations in 1950 and 1960, and his own indomitable spirit.
As an invalid Dennis began writing for “The Outlook”, commenting on radio church
broadcasts. He became a regular and long-standing columnist with wise and whimsical
insights into human foibles.
His family had a close association with the Presbyterian Church. His Father, Mr AJ
McEldowney, was Superintendent of the Christchurch Presbyterian Social Service
Association (1936-1953), and elder, and involved in Presbytery and General Assembly
affairs.
Appt. Librarian at Hewitson Library, Knox College, Dunedin 1966.
“While his formal education was limited, Dennis’s literary skills as a Reviewer and
contributor to publications such as Landfall were well established when he was
appointed as the pioneering Editor and later managing Editor of the Auckland University
Press, which he served for 20 years. The award of an Honorary Doctorate of Literature
by the University was testimony to his outstanding contribution to publishing.
Dennis’ considerable skills as an Editor and publisher were freely given when he edited
the 150th anniversary history of the church, ‘Presbyterians in Aotearoa’ (1990).
Dennis was a man of penetrating ability. He was a friend and confidant to many in the
New Zealand literary community. Despite the medical travails of his early and later life
there was no self-pity in him.” (From Obit.)
Author of “The World Regained” (1957, 2001), “Full of the Warm South” (1983),
“Shaking the Bee Tree” (1992), “Then and There : a 1970’s Diary” (1995).
Died 2003, aged 77 years.

McEWAN, Sr Annie Mabel
b 14.4.1884
From Havelock North
Presbyterian Women’s Training Institute, Dunedin  1908-9.
Ordained as a Deaconess at Havelock North Presb. Church, Sunday 7 November 1909.
South China Mission 12.11.1909
She served as an Evangelist with wholeheareted devotion amongst the women and
children of the villages.
Resigned 31.12.1923 due to contracting tuberculosis. Ill-health had made it impossible
for her to return to China. During most of her time in China she had put up a brave fight
against ill-health.
Spent some years in Central Otago recuperating. She undertook good work in the
Roxburgh Sunday School.
“She was also something of a pioneer in the use of pageantry and dramatic representation
to create and sustain missionary and evangelical interest in young children and their
parents.”
When stronger, she went to live in Caversham, Dunedin, where as well as continuing work
among children, and despite her own failing health, she additionally undertook a gracious
ministry of love and compassion among the aged, sick and infirm.
“Her gracious personality and never-failing optimism endeared her to all, and she was
generous almost to a fault…..
A well-stored mind combined with an understanding heart gave her a great breadth of
outlook which enabled her to cultivate friendly relationships with all sorts of people.
The world is poorer as the result of Miss McEwan’s passing, but her influence lives on
and many who miss her smile and friendly greeting thank God for the day when they first
met her” (From Obit.)
Died 16.11.1939 at Dunedin aged 52 years “after a painful illness bravely and patiently
borne”.

MACFARLANE, Rev John
From the Church of Scotland.
He had been Minister of the Martyrs Church Paisley for 3 years, when he was chosen to accompany
the 150 Scottish immigrants in the ‘Bengal Merchant’ leaving the Clyde on 31.10.1839. They
arrived at Port Nicholson on 20.2.1840, & on the Sun following (23 Feb) he conducted his first
service on Petone beach.  There was a Southerly blowing & rain falling, making it muddy
under foot, but they sang hymns & worshipped in the open on their first Sunday in their new
country. This spot is now marked by a Celtic Cross.
[Mr Ward on page 36 of his recollections of early Wellington records the first service as taking
place at Petone Beach on the 26th February 1840 on a beautiful calm cloudless and sunny day]
Thereafter he held service every Sunday in Bethune’s store on the Hutt River.
"For some time after his arrival, he ministered to the needs of every Protestant in the community,
tramping long miles in his plaidie and preaching in English or Gaelic according to the needs of his
congregation."
When the settlement moved to Thorndon, services were held first in Hunter’s premises, and later in
the Exchange, Customhouse Quay.  He also preached in the native chapel  at Te Aro, and in the
Courthouse Thorndon.  He preached in Gaelic at Kaiwarra for the Highland settlers, the first Gaelic
sermon being preached on 20.6.1844.  For some weeks, until the arrival of the first Anglican
clergyman, Rev John Macfarlane ministered to the needs of all Protestant colonists.  As a result of a
visit to Nelson in 1842 he appealed to the Colonial Committee of the Church of Scotland for a
Minister for the Nelson district.
The draft constitution of the first Presbyterian Church in Wellington was drawn up and unanimously
approved in March 1843; it was a parish of the Church of Scotland and not a part of the Wellington
Presbytery when it was formed, nor had it any formal relation to the PCNZ until 1874; the congregation
and Minister petitioned the 1874 General Assembly to be received into the PCNZ, which was cordially
agreed to.
In April1843 the Rev James Duncan arrived as Missionary to the Maoris in the Manawatu. He made
his headquarters in Wellington while studying the Maori language, and assisted the Rev Macfarlane.
Officiated at the opening of the new Church (St Andrews) on 17.1.1844
Rev Macfarlane left for a visit "only a visit" to Scotland by the ‘Bella Marina’ in October 1844 and
the Church was closed during his absence.  He intended to be absent only 18 months, but owing to
the state of his health he was unable to returnto New Zealand but settled as Minister of Lochgilphead,
in Inverary Argylleshire Scotland, where he died.

Mrs McKee (38)…. was widowed within a year after coming to NZ and left

accompanied the family from Ireland.
“Moved by affection and sympathy, the people paid [over to her] her husband’s
salary for six months and set up a trust fund of over £1,000. This was used to
buy a house and for 17 years, she ran a private girls’ school in which her

Bible class. Women teachers and the Bible class met in her home and her
husband’s library was open to all. In 1890 Mrs McKee began local extension
work. Having moved for health reasons to another house, she began in her own
home a branch Sunday School for 25-30 in Fendalton und Upper Riccarton, and
in addition conducted evening services for adults. She also found time to
