From the Presbyterian Church of Ireland.
Ind Cambridge (Cambridge, Hamilton, Pukemiro) WkP 2.5.1875 (The Induction was
held in the Anglican Church, as the Presbyterian Church was not yet finished.)
Thames 10.2.1877 (one record gives theinduction date as 12 Sept 1877)
Additionally being Secretary of the local Theosophical Society, he appears to have been
instrumental in bringing a woman to the district for the purpose of expounding its principles.
Presbytery thus instituted inquiries. It was found that ordinances were being neglected in
his congregation, That Mr Neill had spoken of God as "an essence" and "a force", had
denied the divinity of Christ, and had preached against the atonement and regeneration.
Despite all this, 86 members of his congregation protested against the intermeddling of
Presbytery. Encouraged to send up a defence to the General Assembly, he entitled it
"The History of a Heresey Hunt. By the Hunted". Assembly concluded that "The ends
of the Christian Ministry contemplated by this church are not being served and will not
be served by Mr Neill's continuance in the pastorate at the Thames, the pastoral tie
between him and his congregation be dissolved."
The pastoral tie was dissolved by
Presbytery 14.2.1894
He was suspended from the ministry of the Presbyterian Church by the General Assembly
in
1894 on account of his
Theosophical stance.

NICOL, Rev Campbell
b 24.12.1919 at Dunfermline, Scotland
w Laura Agnes b 17.11.1925 m 3.7.1945
(Laura had three Aunts, one a very famous Shakespearean actress, another being
chief script censor for the BBC, and the third used to broadcast coded messages to
the French underground during the war.)
He came from a musical family, and was encouraged to pursue music interests. As a
young man he sang in public and throughout his life he delighted audiences with his
fine tenor voice. Attended Queen Anne School in Dunfermline and left secondary
school at age 14 without attaining any special qualification.
Served in the British Army 1939 to 1946 with the 51st Highland Division, being both
at the Dunkirk evacuation and later in the Normandy invasion forces. Sang to troops
including playing the drums with some famous British orchestras during his army service.
As he was among the last group demobilised, he remained in Germany for a year after
the war. The Army provided teachers for those who wished to continue their education
as well as setting up a School of Theology under a German Theologian which he attended.
Deciding to enter the Ministry, he returned to Britain but found himself back in the
theatre in a professional capacity, including working for the BBC.
It had, however, always been his dream to go to New Zealand where he had an Aunt
living, and it was on the voyage out in 1945 that he met his future wife Laura.
Married at Riverton before both returned to Britain, with Campbell re-entering the theatre,
being seldom without work and becoming well-known and popular.
After some soul searching, Campbell decided however to follow his call to enter the
Ministry and they also both decided to emigrate to New Zealand.
Emigrated to New Zealand in 1947.
