“Tank brought many qualities to his ministry. One of them was that he was a perfectionist.
Clearly he held the conviction that if a job was worth doing it was worth doing to the best
of one’s ability. This was evident in all areas of the life of the church in which he served
and in all parishes. He readily faced challenges and, in meeting them, had the ability of
taking his parish members along with him.
He is remembered for the warmth of his smile, his dedication to every task he undertook,
his practical application of the Word and the depth at which he touched people’s lives.”
We honour Tank as a mover, an enabler, an encourager and a true saint of God.”

TE KAAWA, Mr Hepeta
born circa 1923
wife Millie Amiria Hunia born 1936 died 17 January 2018
Hepeta Te Kaawa was born in Ruatahuna to Tawhakirangi Horomona and Kiira Te Kaawa. Through
his parents he belongs to Tuhoe, Ngati Awa and Ngati Tuwharetoa, and such was his
place in Ngagi Tuwharetoa that he held the Mauri ( in this case Mauri means a
talisman which is a symbol of the hidden principle protecting the vitality of the tribe)
since the death of Rev. Arapeta Te Rire. When Hepeta stood to speak on the marae one
soon realized that he knew the Kawa intimately, yet he did not make a show of such
knowledge. ...
Following World War Two he enlisted in the Aotearoa New Zealand Overseas forces
and served for two years as a gunner in Korea. This left him profoundly deaf. Hepeta
grew up in Ruatahuna – Maungapohatu when Sr Annie was in her prime, and John
Laughton was in Maungapohatu. As a child he was baptized at Ruatahuna. His life
was deeply touched by the Christian faith through those devoted and faithful people,
and in 1952 he was confirmed in the Christian faith.
When in mature years he offered himself to train as a Minister, and so in 1970 he
entered Te Wananga a Rangi Maori Theological College. He did not pass on the
fact of his deafness, and missed a great deal of the course. It was considered he
should not continue. This must have been a severe disappointment to him, but he
had the courage to remain an elder in his own parish.
He returned home to Onepu to be the Kaitiaki (Guardian, protector) of the sacred
covenant between the Ringatu Bishop the Right Rev Eru Tumutara and the Very Rev
John Laughton, which he maintained to the day he died as Principal Chief of Ngati
Tuwharetoa. His wife Millie became Secretary of Te Hinota, and he gave her all the
help he could, and whenever possible attended meetings of Te Hinota, here he
showed his expertise on the marae. (from Obit.)
Died 1994.

accounting skills gained not from academic training at a University but from natural
endowment and the Whare Wananga of life’s experience, saw him being involved in many
positions on many committees. The Urewera National Park Board, Maungapohatu

In 1923 he came to the West Coast of NZ. The first 20 years were spent in
Greymouth where John not only worked in saw milling, but trained as an
architect. In 1932 John married Isabella Campbell. His first son, Tom, was born
in Greymouth. Isabella's health deteriorated and she died in 1944. John then
shifted to Auckland with his young son, Tom. St Johns Church Greymouth was
always foremost in John's mind. He was an elder, organist, and Sunday School
Superintendent amongst many other things. The more he was involved in the
ministry of the Church in Greymouth, the more he felt the call to full time ministry.
In 1946 he was appointed Assistant Missionary to Mt Albert Church in Auckland.
His main work was in Owairaka, a new housing area. As well as leading worship,
children's work, prayer meetings, he visited homes looking for Presbyterian families.
In 1946 John married a local Deaconess, Agnes Fordyce. Throughout his long
ministry Agnes was a strong supporter of all John did. They had one son, John.
In 1947 he shifted to Picton, becoming Home Missionary of that station. John and
Agnes worked tirelessly for the people and were very quickly embraced by the
congregation. During this period John was ordained as Minister. As well as
parish ministry John was required to do Knox College study in preparation for his
ordination. (from Obit.)

“…Kihoro was a roadman for the Public Works Department at Toatoa, when he met Hoani [The Rev JG Laughton]. He then became a worker for Christ and the Church, his changed heart led him to make pathways and roads to bring his people to Christ. Although there were parish difficulties, as was typical in all our [Maori Synod] Parishes, because he was a greatly respected Elder, an important Chief [of the Tuhoe Tribe], and a Christian, he was soon able to remedy those situations. He was therefore successful in winning many souls to Christ.”

Youngest son of William Thom (of Ashentilly-Maryculter) and Mary nee Burnett.
Educated at the University of Edinburgh 1846 to 1848, the University of Aberdeen (MA),
And the Free Church of Scotland New College, Edinburh 1847 to 1850.
Licensed and Ordained by the Free Church of Scotland Presbytery of Kincardine O’Nell 1856
To New Zealand, arrived Wellington as Probationer on the “Oliver Lang” 19.12.1856.
Ordained Turakina (as their first Minister) WgP 1857 (his work was supported by a £50
contribution from the Free Church of Scotland)
New Plymouth 1858 (?)
“Thom came from Wanganui to reside in New Plymouth and hold services in various
districts of Taranaki towards the end of the fifties. He could not be expected to achieve
much, there was no settled charge. He was scarcely adapted for ministering to one. He
seems to have been unable to secure any hearty cooperation on the part of the
unsettled settlers.” (from “History of the PCNZ”, 1898)
Rev Thom appears to have returned south to the Hutt by the end of 1858 however he
considered that Taranaki held sufficient Presbyterians to justify the establishment of
a permanent charge there..
Hutt Valley WnP 9.8.1858 - first Church opened in the Hutt 11.1858, cost $80.
In latter part of 1860 he came to Auckland and was admitted as a member of Auckland
Presbytery on 1.1.1861
Rev Thom had sometime previous received an invitation from the people of New Plymouth
to be their Minister “as soon as the present disturbances in that Province are so far
arranged as to enable him to do so.” Meanwhile he was willing to work under the direction
of Auckland Presbytery.
St James, Auckland (Supply) AP to 5.8.1862 and in 1863 while the Rev Bruce was
involved with Church Extension work.
Resumed work in Taranaki Apr 1863 although may have carried our itinerant work in
the district from Dec 1860.
Commenced regular services in a chapel in Devon Street New Plymouth 12.4.1863 (This
was probably the Congregational Chapel which had been vacant since the Rev Horatious
Groube went to Melbourne in 1861).
Granted a Presbytery Certificate by the Presbytery of Auckland 5.10.1864
To Australia, arrived in New South Wales 1864 –
Admitted by the Synod of Eastern Australia 2.11.1864
To the Presb. Church of New South Wales 1864
Dubbo and Wellington c.1864 to 1866
Richmond River – Brunswick R. – Tweed R. (Coraki) 1866 to 1869
“There are some men more fitted for itinerating than for regular pastoral work. They are more
at home breaking up new ground and casting in the seed than fencing, weeding and patiently
nursing the crop into a fruitful harvest. Mr Thom was one of these.” (Dickson)
“He went to NSW and did good pioneering work there.”
“….as a laborious pioneer, he succeeded in founding several churches. His last station was
on the banks of the Richmond River, and there while in the act of ferrying a friend across
the water, his boat was accidentally upset and he was drowned.”
A foundation member of Wellington Presbytery established 3.11.1857
A member of the first Home Missions Committee of the PCNZ
Nickname “Wiggy”.
Brother of the Rev William Thom (Scotland/Australia).
Died 2.9.1869
