Came to New Zealand in January 1948, marrying Ruth on the 7th January at Island Bay, Wellington.

Died 19th Dec 2007 at Bethesda Home, Blenheim, aged 92 years.

URIE,  Rev  James

A student of the Free Church of Scotland.
Appointed by the Colonial Committee of the Free Church of Scotland in 1860 to go to New Zealand
in response to a request from the Presbyterian Synod of Otago & Southland for a Minister to fill the
West Taieri Charge.

"Unfortunately a disagreement arose between minister and people which led to Mr Urie's resignation.
He was not a good preacher,and those worthies knew and appreciated good preaching, but he was a
kindly and good man, and but for the feeling that arose would have done good work. Mr and Mrs Urie
were a nice couple. He was elderly and somewhat pompous as a minister, but kindly and benign."

Halfway Bush.
Pomahaka & Mataura (Tapanui) MtP  23.3.1865
A daughter of the Rev Urie died in January 1871, just a few hours after his return from a Synod meeting.
The shock told on him severely and his health broke down. Two neighbouring Ministers assisted him in
his last communion, and although in ill-health, the Rev Urie bravely preached and presided at the
Communion. A parishioner drove the Rev (and Mrs) Urie in easy stages to the hospital in Dunedin (still
an onerous eight day drive) but he died the second day after his arrival. A large sum of money was
raised for his widow and the two remaining children.
Mrs Urie, accompanied by at least one surviving child, returned to Scotland after her husband's death.
"The Rev James Urie of Tapanui was a pastor much esteemed and beloved in the remote rural charge
where he laboured, and by his brethren generally, who recognised his sterling integrity and christian
worth. In him this church has to mourn the removal of one of her oldest ministers, who was, at the
same time, one of the most diligent in all pastoral labours." (Synod Memorial Minute)
Died 1871 in office, aged 43 years. Interred in theTapanui cemetery. In later years the congregation
charged itself with the care of his grave.
