The Presbyterian Church Archives now holds a number of additional resources
which complement our own Mission holdings. These resources are only available
for use in the Presbyterian Archives and may not be lent out. Copying of
items of interest for personal or research purposes is permitted however
our normal research and copying fees will apply. Research fees are waived
for students undertaking thesis or similar research provided that we receive
a copy of the completed thesis or work.

We are current endeavouring to purchase a range of missions related microfilm
and microfiche from overseas using funds granted for this purpose by the
Presbyterian Synod of Otago and Southland.

"Quarterly Jottings From the New Hebrides" 1893 to 1966, issues
1 to 272 (microfilm) : The longest running serial publication devoted entirely
to the New Hebrides (now known as Vanuatu) and published by the John G
Paton Mission Fund. Its purpose was to spread interest in New Hebrides
Mission work and help to raise additional funds for the Evangelisation
of these islands.
This publication contains a wealth of information on the New Hebrides
which is invaluable to researchers including :
numerous articles by and about individual Missionaries, island life
and culture, political affairs, shipping, transport and communication,
health, European influence, French influence, labour trade, land, languages,
Catholic influence (and other denominations), finance, agriculture, commerce,
education, effect of World Wars, and much more. All subjects and
people are carefully indexed in a book record.
Please Note : Original copies of issue numbers 51 to 53 (Jan
1906 to July 1906), 55 to 66 (Jan 1907 to Oct 1909),
118 (Oct 1922), 120 (Apr 1923), 143 to 150 (Jan 1929 to Oct 1930) are
held in the Archives.
The above microfilm does not include issues 128, 146, 156 to 161, 166
to 169, 176, 182, 195 to 196, 199, 212, 259 to 262, 273 onwards. All of
these missing copies are held in Australia except issues 280 and 282 to
284 which cannot be located anywhere.
"The Minutes of the New Hebrides Presbyterian Mission Synod"
1857 to 1936 (microfilm) : The minutes of the annual meeting of the governing
body for the Presbyterian Church Mission in the New Hebrides.
The Missionaries in the New Hebrides, who were all supported by a number
of Churches around the World, were formed into a Synod which generally
met annually to discuss common issues and policy. Most matters of note
would be discussed at the Synod meetings and duly recorded in the minutes.
There is no general index however subject headings appear at the side of
each page. Again, this is an invaluable resource for researchers.
"New Hebrides Mission Synod Correspondence" July 1936 to 1948
(microfilm) : Copies of the outgoing correspondence of the Clerk of the
New Hebrides Presbyterian Mission Synod.
This correspondence may provide additional information to researchers
on issues being dealt with by the Synod including liaison with overseas
Mission Boards.
"Newspaper Clippings" c.1891 to c.1905 (microfilm) : an album of newspaper clippings written by Missionaries and others relating to New Hebrides affairs, having been collected by the Rev T Watt Leggatt. These document in some detail many issues relating to the New Hebrides during this period.
"Presbyterian Church of Victoria" - Proceedings of the General Assembly 1895, 1909, 1912 to 1914 (hard copy): These contain the reports of their Foreign Missions Committee includes their New Hebridean Mission.
"Free Church of Scotland - Foreign Missions Committee Minute Books" 1872 to 1900 (microfilm) : The minutes of the Free Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee. An index exists in hard copy format to references in the minutes to New Hebrides Missionaries and Island affairs in general. (refer also next entry)
"United Free Church of Scotland - Foreign Missions Committee Minute Books" 1900 to 1929 (microfilm) : A continuation of the above after the amalgamation of the Free Church of Scotland and the United Free Church of Scotland in 1900.
"Free Church of Scotland - Foreign Missions Committee Correspondence" 1891 to 1900 (microfilm) : Correspondence relating to the Free Church of Scotland Mission to the New Hebrides including liaison with other Mission Boards and the New Hebrides Presbyterian Mission Synod.
"United Free Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee Correspondence" 1891 to 1900 (microfilm) : A continuation of the above after the amalgamation of the Free Church of Scotland and the United Free Church of Scotland in 1900.
"United Free Church of Scotland - Women's Foreign Missions Committee Correspondence" pre 1900 to 1927 (hard copy) : Copies of outwards correspondence, mostly to the NZ Presbyterian Church Foreign Missions Committee Convener concerning jointly supported women Missionaries in Madras, India. Included are a few letters (including pre 1900) addressed to Women's Missionary Societies in New Zealand, letters enquiring about Mission service in India, and some correspondence to the Missionaries themselves. Letters addressed to or names mentioned include Mrs Longhurst , Miss AE Evans, Miss A Henderson, Miss EHM Giesen, Miss H MacGregor, Sr RM Davey.
"The World Missionary Conference Proceedings", including New York 1900, Edinburgh 1910, Jerusalem 1928, Tambaram Madras 1938, Willingen Germany 1952, Ghana 1957-58, including the World Atlas of Christian Missions (hard copy).
"Layman's Foreign Missions Enquiry" : Religious reports, 1933 (hard copy).
"The Student Christian Movement" - Papers and addresses of John Mott 1891 to 1945 including reports of "The Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions", "The Young Men's Christian Association", and "The International Missionary Council", 1910 to 1941 (hard copy).
"The International Review of Missions" 1912 to 2000 (hard copy) : A quarterly review dealing with work among non-Christian peoples, published initially by "The Continuation Committee of the World Missionary Conference Edinburgh" (1910), then "The International Missionary Missionary Council", and subsequently by "The Conference on World Mission and Evangelism of the World Council of Churches, Geneva" .
"Pacific Affairs Bulletin", Jan 1929 to Dec 1930, and Mar/Jun/Sep 1935 (hard copy) : Published by the Institute of Pacific Relations, Honolulu and contains references to progress and political issues in the Pacific, including China.
"The Missionary Review of the World" Journal, 1904 to 1910 (broken series) (hard copy) : An illustrated monthly magazine of Missionary methods, problems, biography and history, published in the USA.
"Australia And The World's Evangelisation", 1903 (hard copy)
: a collection of addresses delivered at the Student Conference on Home
and Foreign Missions at Melbourne Australia and Christchurch New Zealand
- includes addresses
by John R Mott, Rev Rutherford Waddell, Rev R Erwin, Rev Alexander
Don and many others.
"The Journal of the (NZ) Polynesian Society" 1903 to 2002 (hard copy) : The Society was formed to promote the study of anthropology, ethnology, philology, history and antiquities of the Polynesian races (including NZ Maori).
