The Rev Wayne Matheson has been appointed as the national Assembly Executive Secretary of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. The role is the equivalent to a General Manager and will be based in the Church’s national office in Wellington.
Wayne will be inducted into the role at a special service at St John’s in the City Presbyterian Church, Wellington, on Tuesday 21 October at 6.30pm.
The Church’s new Assembly Executive Secretary brings 23 years ministry experience and strong management skills to the role, most recently as minister at Knox-St Columba Presbyterian Church in Lower Hutt and as Convenor of the Church’s Council of Assembly, the body that sets the strategic direction and policy development of the national Church.
Born and raised in Christchurch, after leaving school Wayne worked for the Public Trust Office in Christchurch and Invercargill before applying for ministry and studying at Otago University.
Wayne has ministered to congregations in Balclutha, Whangarei and Wellington.
He has served on the Board of Proprietors of St Oran’s College, Wellington where he worked to strengthen the relationship between the school and the Church.
Wayne’s experience in a number of national, regional and local church roles gives him a strong background in mission leadership, governance, people and financial management. He has led a wide range of strategic and mission projects. He has also undertaken study-leave at Westminster College, Cambridge, UK.
Wayne enjoys living in Lower Hutt, Wellington and his interests include following the Phoenix FC.
He is married to Adrienne and they have two adult children.
